Witbier Belgian Ale | 5 Gallon Beer Recipe Kit | All-Grain

    A very unique Belgian Ale. This recipe has moderate bitterness from early kettle additions of Saaz hops. This beer is spiced with Bitter Orange Peel and Coriander which lends a surprisingly pleasant flavor and aroma. The grain bill includes Oats and Flaked Barley which when combined with a very special non-flocculating yeast leaves a cloudy, almost white appearance. Hence the name wit which means white. This is a very refreshing style that has a light, crisp flavor. There are some phenolic flavors as well, like you would find in some Belgian Abbey Ales and even German Hefeweizen. Hoegarden or Celis White would be some commercial examples that represent this style.

        Very good Belgian Wit

        This recipe kit makes a very good Belgian Wit. I used WLP400 and it came out almost as expected. Coriander, orange zest, and a spicy pepper note on the aroma and flavor. Followed the recipe instructions exactly and hit the recipe's numbers as expected OG- 1.061 and FG- 1.013 for a 6.3% ABVNot 5 stars for two reasons. First, More Beer's grain crush is rather conservative so I double crushed the grain to get to a 70% efficiency. Second, the recipe is a bit out of BJCP guidelines for OG (10 points above). I suspect this may make putting together a kit easier but this beer is a little heavy in all aspects for a normal Belgian Wit. Still delicious though.
