Tilt™ Hydrometer and Thermometer - Blue

    Description

Track your fermentation progress without ever disturbing your wort! The Tilt Hydrometer and Thermometer is added directly to your fermenter to provide real-time data on the current gravity and temperature of your wort, eliminating the hassle and potential contamination that comes from opening your fermenter to pull samples. The Tilt is especially useful for brewers fermenting in glass carboys or plastic fermenters that don't have spigots for sample taking.

Designed for homebrewing, the Tilt hydrometer lets you instantly read your brew's specific gravity and temperature on your compatible Apple iPhone/iPad or Android smartphone/tablet or Tilt Pi. Most Bluetooth 4.0+ devices will work with the Tilt. You can then optionally log data to the cloud using their free Google Sheets template or other 3rd party cloud platforms.

Tilt's goal is to help homebrewers brew better beer. The Tilt hydrometer allows you to check the specific gravity and temperature of your beer while it's fermenting, without ever having to open your fermenter or pour out any of your precious brew. This makes brewing more consistent and easier to track.

Here are some of the new features of the Tilt:

    • Range: Better reception and range. With the increased transmission power your Tilt will send data through larger, thicker-walled fermenters.
    • Precision: Upgraded sensors. With an improved temperature sensor and accelerometer your Tilt will operate with more precision.
    • Efficiency: Reduced power consumption so more brews, less battery changing.
    • New Look: Newly designed custom circuit board and harness.

If using multiple Tilt hydrometers for different batches of fermenting beer you must use a different color for each batch. The app will not read multiple hydrometers of the same color.

Each Tilt comes calibrated and ready to go with a pre-installed battery that lasts 12-24 months depending on usage. Just download the free app, sanitize your Tilt, drop it in your fermenter, and start taking readings with your phone, tablet, or Tilt Pi.

The specific gravity is accurate +/- 0.002 within the Tilt's range of 0.990 to 1.120. The thermometer is accurate +/- 1°F (+/- 0.5°C).

Download the free Tilt app at the Apple App Store or Google Play Store or get the free Tilt Pi download.

        indispensable

I have been brewing for about 9 months now, on my 15th batch and in that time, this has been the best addition to my arsenal of brewing tools. No longer need to mess with hot wort to try to get a good starting gravity read, no longer have to save some brew after the keg transfer to see where I end up, all the while not knowing how the ferment is going, and no longer have to guess where my temps are since this is telling me everything from end to end. This does read through the walls of a grainfather conical. I initially was sending the measures up to the GF cloud but then I stopped doing that to just walk by the fermenter every now and then, snap open the app and get a read. It goes right into the GF app to chart the temp and gravity progress. This blue one is my second tilt so I can track two ferments.

        Solid Brewery Tool

I now have Tilts for all 4 of my fermenters. While I still use a hydrometer for my official OG and FG gravity readings, the Tilts are an excellent way to track fermentation progress. I find that I tend to send beer to a keg a bit sooner knowing the SG status from a Tilt.

        Great Product

This is a fantastic improvement in tracking fermentation. Really love the interaction with google sheets - just link the sheet to my brewing log. Worked well with the stainless fermenter as long as the phone is close.

        Great tool for monitoring fermentation!

Seems to be fairly accurately tracking hydrometer readings and the temperature, while off 2.5 degrees, is easily calibrated. I did the more complicated two point SG calibration and recommend it for better accuracy.

2nd Tilt helps me know what’s going on

Started to brew larger batches but didn’t upgrade my fermenter (5 gallon Corning kegs w/ spunding valve). So I needed a second Tilt as I’m using two kegs now (about 4.5 gallon of wort in each). It so cool to know / track what both are now doing and the software / app makes it easy to view!

        I'm addicted to my TILT!

This device works exactly as advertised! I've confirmed it's properly calibrated by cross-referencing it with both a hydrometer and a refractometer. The reports it generates on google docs does a good job of helping you keep track of fermentation and it's helpful to plan for future fermentation schedules.

Great for monitoring fermentation, but don't depend on it to be precise

These are great tools for monitoring the fermentation and knowing when the fermentation is complete. Good for data logging if you are into that, but don't see it as an accurate scientific tool unless you are willing to spend the time and energy to accurately create a calibration curve.

        Love it.

I love being able to track the progress of my fermentation without taking samples or opening the fermenter. Worth the cost to me.

        Love the real-time data

The Tilt performed exactly as advertised. The real-time feedback on fermentation temperature and gravity is really useful. The report with the Sheets app is great for those of us who love data.

        Works great !

Works great! I like the logging feature, but the Tilt only logs when it is connected to a phone. Most people cannot leave their phone next to the fermenter for weeks at a time. It would be nice if the device logged SG and temp internally then transferred the data when the Tilt connected to a phone. My guess this was done to keep costs down. I would happily pay another $20-$40 for the internal logging feature. Otherwise, the device is well designed. It is nice to see how the SG changes over time without having to sample my precious beer!

This thing works great! I got the Tilt and the PLAATO To try side-by-side and the Plato I could never get to work. Buy the tilt!

I love the fact that I can just drop it in and check it every day through Bluetooth the only knock on it is that it does not have Wi-Fi capability hook up yet so I have to be close by with my phone to check it other than that as the technology develops I think it will get better very pleased with it though takes a lot of guesswork out of your beginning gravity and final gravity

Great addition to your brew kit.

I was a little hesitant to spend the $$ on this but it is worth every penny. Download the app for your phone and keep track of your fermentation. Now I want another one so I can monitor multiple beers at the same time. That means I need another fermentation chamber…….

Love this tool to give accurate temp and SG

One star less just because you have to be pretty close to fermenter for Bluetooth connection. So nice to see the SG without losing any wort. Make sure to validate calibration with distilled water before using

        Cool but flawed

OK, let’s be honest, as beer gadgets go, this one is pretty cool...in concept. The ability to track fermentation parameters in real time is real cool. However, not all of those parameters are that accurate. The temperature seems spot-on and is really helpful. The gravity though, at least on my model, has been way off. The first time I used it it read OG 12 points lower than my refractometer and glass hydrometer showed (I always check with both). The instructions are sparse so it was only after fumbling around with the equally sparse app did I realize I could calibrate it (even though it comes factory calibrated). But even after calibrating in water it still reads about 5 points low. So super handy for timing a diacetyl rest and just tracking fermentation, but by no means perfect. And for the price I was expecting more accuracy. But I do like it and will continue to use it. Will I purchase a second one? Maybe not.

        Love It

This is the second one I have and Love it. No more having to take samples or guessing at the gravity. It works GREAT. With 2 now I can have 2 different batches fermenting at the same time.

        Jim T.

Why are there different colors of these?  Does each color function differently or are they the same?  If they are the same, why the different colors in the first place?

        Doug

If you only ferment one batch of beer at a time, then you only need one Tilt (and any color is fine). But if you ferment multiple batches simultaneously, then you need a different color Tilt in each one. Think of it like each color Tilt has its own transmitting frequency, which allows the app to know which fermenting beer it’s looking at.

        Anthony Lehtola

The distinct colors are used to select the device in the software. I don't know if it's driven by frequency or ID, but you can't have more than 1 of each color active at one time.

Does this work with the KegLand RAPT Fermentation Chamber?

        MoreBeer!

I'm sorry but I have no idea if it does. I do know it's the only way to go. I have four of them. A great piece of mind know8ng you always have instant info on your brew

Does this work in a mash tun to monitor temperature?

        MoreBeer!

I have not tried using the Tilt in a mash but technically it seems one could. The stated temperature range is 0 - 185F. So that would be in the range for most mashes. However I am not sure why one would want to use a Tilt to monitor mash temps. I don’t think the Tilt will penetrate very deeply into the grain bed especially in thin mashes. The Tilt will be accurate and reliable but I don’t think you will get the temps you want (i.e. the temp in the middle of your grain bed.) I assume you want to read temps in a closed mash vessel (e.g. a cooler). If that is the case then I think a better solution would be a thermal well with a temperature probe (or a cheap temp controller). You can rig the thermal well and probe to pass through from the lid/top. Your mileage may vary.

Has anyone tried to replace the battery? Wondering how easy or difficult it is.

        MoreBeer!

Easy. Rubber gloves or one of those jar opener rubber pads helps get a better grip if needed. Just make sure to get the o ring back in and note that the battery is an odd size (CR123A)

        MoreBeer!

Yes easy. Unscrew the bottom end remove the board and replace the battery with a CR123A then reverse the procedure. Batteries are lithium so they should last quite awhile.

        MoreBeer!

There is a video on YouTube that shows how to do this. I wanted to include the link but this does not allow me to do so. You should be able to find the video easily.

        MoreBeer!

Several times. No big deal. Get some soft jaw pliers so that you don't scratch up / crack the case. Otherwise straight forward.

        MoreBeer!

I have replaced my battery several times. I grab the top with a pair of pliers and spin the body.
