Everything looks great
This brew was great but hear me out. I ordered the grains milled. When I received them there was clearly 20-25% that had never been touched. I scrutinized this closely as my efficiency has never met expectations since going all grain! I took the grains to a friends brewery and we put them through his mill and the difference was dramatic. The end result was a great brew that I will make again but not with More Beers milling!! I got my own mill for Christmas.
This very forgiving stout turned out to be spectacular. I thought it may have been ruined since my pH was off in the beginning and took me almost the entire mash to correct. However, this came out to have such a full-bodied malty/chocolatey flavor with notes of molasses, even a slight hickory remnant. It has a nice creamy mouthfeel, as intended from the oatmeal, and a lingering foamy head. Mine came out a bit under expected ABV at 4.7%, which is fine, and not overpowering for a stout. Although not a summer beer, I find myself coming home and enjoying this before and with dinner (August and September heat in the South!) I fermented at 68 F for 2.5 weeks, and did not cold crash before transferring to keg. The S05 yeast fully attenuated as per package specs. Overall, I would not hesitate to make this again…maybe this time in the Winter.
Bought this based on other reviews. Added extra oats, lactose, and cacao nibs as another person suggested. Other that a lower gravity during the mash process, this turned out quite nicely. Will definitely brew this again.
I use this base to make my Hunka Hunka Brurnin Love (peanut butter and banana) oatmeal stout. It an awesome kit.
This beer was one of the best stouts I have ever made! Here to order a second batch. I had 10 people try this beer and everyone wanted seconds.. I added 8 oz. of lactose sugar at the end of the boil, an extra lb of flaked oats and 6 oz. of crushed cocoa nibs for the last 5 days in the fermentation tank. Note, I purchased packaged coca nibs from a nutrition store and had no issues with infection etc. I did not want to go with the vodka sanitation route. After two weeks in the keg things started to balance out nicely. I would recommend keg conditioning for at least 2-3 weeks before tapping it. The beer had a strong chocolate mocha flavor which was great! I will most likely go with 4oz of coca nibs for the next batch to try and bring out some of the other flavors a bit more.
Great kit. Surprising amount of chocolate flavor.
I took the advice from other reviews and added an extra pound of flaked oats for body. I also added 8 oz of lactose sugar at the end of the boil as well as 4 oz of cocoa nibs for the last 7 days of fermentation (I quickly warmed the nibs in a nonstick skillet and soaked them in vodka over night). I used Safale s-04 and left it in the fermenter for 31 days. It came out with a nice mocha flavor just the way I like it, similar to the taste of Left Hand's Milk Stout. This will probably become my go to sweet stout recipe.
Very good beer with lots of flavor. Smooth with a nice finish.
Great kit to start with. So basic, and cheap, that it gives you a lot of room to play and experiment with. Try adding cacao nibs, coconut, or even caramel to it. Solid base for an oatmeal stout.
My family and friends really enjoyed this beer! I would recommend this to anyone who likes a oatmeal stout. I used safale S O4 and added 3 oz coca nibs and 3 vanilla beans for 5 days before kegging. Won’t change a thing next time I brew this beer!
Have done both the all grain and mini-mash. For the little added effort I prefer the all grain.
I bought two of these to do a double batch to introduce my brother-in-law to homebrewing. Now 6 weeks later we are enjoying our hardwork. Originally I was going to use a recipe from one of Gordon Strong's books, but for the price this kit was more affordable rather than buying the ingredients separately. Definitely will brew this beer again. For the yeast we used the WLP002 option.
This is one of the better beers I've ever made, it's a great kit - right up there with the malty brown kit. The beer was excellent on it's own, with just the right amount of sweetness. After a couple samples I added 2.5 oz coffee grounds for 12 hours directly into the keg and I'm very happy with it. If I did this again I'd do either less coffee or less time as the flavor is very pronounced, but it makes a perfect excuse for weekend morning drinking.PS morebeer: This is the third all grain kit I've received with the extract brewing instructions. Not that most of us will need the instructions, but wondered if you were aware.
I used this kit and added one lb of Lactose during the last ten minutes of boil stage as well as a package of cocoa nibs during the kegging process. Turned out way better than I expected. It was like an iced coffee milk shake beer. Great silky mouth feel with hints of chocolate. This will be in the rotation.
Sitting here at the PC enjoying a glass of and reviewing this stout simultaneously. Who said guys cannot multitask?Nice smooth flavour and creamy head from the oats with a good hop backbone. Very pleased with this one.I'm at least 0.5% ABV high having finally got my sparge dialed in but the other ingredients support the higher alcohol just fine.Recommended. I might just buy another kit today myself.
This is a nice Oatmeal Stout, my friends all agree!
This was my first oatmeal stout. Based on other reviews, I added an extra pound of flaked oats for extra mouth feel. I used Imperial A10 Darkness yeast, and with no starter this started fermenting within a few hours. This is a great oatmeal stout that has received good reviews from everyone who has tried it.
A very enjoyable, well balanced stout. Lots of complex flavor from all the many dark grains.
Turned out very nice. I will definitely brew this one again.-JWF
I was very proud of myself with this recipe. I felt I nailed the style. With just the pound of oats I felt the body and mouth feel was perfect. I racked it over to a secondary to clear it up a bit. I carbonated naturally with corn sugar for 2 weeks and was amazed with the results. I've had many homebrew friends tell me that it was awesome and want me to make it again. Cheers to Morebeer!
This is my second batch of Oatmeal Stout. It has a very good after taste. The beer gets much better as it ages. I would recommend to let it set for a couple of months.
I go back and forth between this and MoreBeer's Pliny for my favorite kit. I lean slightly towards this one because it is my wife's favorite, and probably a big reason I am still allowed to brew on a weekly basis. Per the suggestion of other reviewers, I doubled the Oats. At first it was way too sweet, but after about a month in the kegerator, it was perfect - silky smooth and well-balanced. We just tapped out of our last batch, so I'll be back at MoorBeer this weekend to get some more...
I agree with some others, mine was a little short of mouth feel early on. As it gets more time sitting, the flavors come out more and the oatmeal feel increases. Some folks might still want more, I'm not sure how far I'd go. I would not double the oats without some 6 row, jmho. I will order this again, soon. This is one of my favorite beers I've made (20+). I made this as a BIAB recipe, I'll sparge in a mash tun next time and get a better efficiency. Even still I had an OG of 64.
After looking at the reviews here with complaints of a lack of body, i decided to try this kit, however i added an extra pound of flaked oats to add more body. The results were perfect!
New to all grain and this was an easy brew. I added PB2 peanut butter powder and nibs to secondary, and it turned out great thanks to a good base beer recipe. I would definitely brew this again.
This is a good kit, but when I entered it into competition, one of the remarks was, "couldn't taste or tell that there were any oats." Maybe up the oats next time?
I made this for my son's baby shower. Some of my "beer friends" actually returned for a 2nd glass of it over some craft stouts and oatmeal stouts we had purchased as a comparison. I don't know if you can give a better review than that.
