Oak Infustion Tube for 60 Gallon Barrels

    Description

Breathe new life into old barrels! There’s no need to spend big money on new barrels when you can use an inexpensive and readily available neutral barrel, along with this Oak Infusion Tube to get the same results.

The Oak Cube Infusion Tube is simple to use and versatile. With it, you have complete control over the specific blend and intensity of oak flavor you want to add to your beer. You simply load the tube with oak cubes and lower it into the barrel. Leave it to steep until you are satisfied with the level of oak infusion.

The Infusion Tube has a silicone bung at the top and bottom of the tube. This way you can completely submerge it into your barrel & secure it, to ensure you keep an airtight seal. It also allows for easy emptying after you are done with the cubes.

Loading Instructions: Remove the bottom silicone bung; fill the Infusion Tube with one bag of Cubes; replace the bottom bung firmly; insert the loaded tube into the carboy and secure the top bung tightly.

    The tube accommodates 8 oz of Oak Cubes at a time. 24" L x 1 3/4"D with a 5" stem.

About the Oak Cubes: Each new 8 oz load of Stavin Oak Cubes (the brand that we sell) has an effective extraction time of two-three months, providing 33 percent of new barrel extraction. This means you can adjust your use of these cubes to achieve the level of oak flavor you desire. All Stavin cubes are fire toasted in the traditional method, a crucial stage in the processing of these cubes. These really are the highest quality oak cubes on the market. We have tested other, less expensive, cubes and they are not even comparable.

        Buyer Beware!

Does NOT fit easily into the bung hole!! To use as is I would have had to wiggle and "force" it down in. My concern with that was how hard would it be to get back out and what damage would be done! Fortunately I built a "bung hole reamer" (photo) a few years ago. I reamed out about 1mm of the opening and viola! - slides right in and the tube bung and my bungs still work perfectly. Happy now! But! I really think this shortcoming should be fixed!!

        Infusion tubes

The infusion tubes work well, the only real issue was that some of our barrels had tighter buns bun holes, so the infusion tubes did not fit without carving out the bun holes more so not sure whose fault that is. Overall, they were good and a decent value for getting some oak integrated into our wines.

        Doesn't fit

I tried the Oak infusion tubes on 4 different manufacturers brands of 60 g barrels and the tube is too large to fit into the bung hole without enlarging the bung hole. Otherwise good quality We just put it in a 80 gal flex tank.

        what size is the bung?

        MoreBeer!

I’m not prepared to give exact size in inches or metrics. It is the size that fits a standard 60 gallon wooden barrel. What I have found is that the bung hole size differs from barrel to barrel. Consequently I have had to use my Dremel tool to sand and shave the bung holes on some barrels to make the tubes fit. Not a difficult task and the tubes end up with a tight fit love them.

        MoreBeer!

The bung is sized for a full 60-gal barrel. I use half barrels with a smaller diameter bung. So I opened up the barrel bung holes with a cabinetmakers rasp and that solved the problem. Also the infusion tubes are sized for a full barrel so I had to cut out about 6 inches & re-weld the length of the tube and solved that problem. The tubes work fine.

        MoreBeer!

Hi Roy - I don't know the exact top and bottom diameters of the taper or the manufacturing tolerance but I'll say the bungs look capable of fitting any barrel I have ever come across. BUT !! BEWARE! It is the diameter of the infusion tube you need to watch out for! I purchased these for two barrels I already had filled. When I went to insert the very first one I realized that after getting the tube in about 2 to 3 inches I was having to shove and wiggle it down. I concluded I would have a horrible time getting them back out if inserted all the way so out it came - scraping the bung hole all the way! My entire fleet of barrels are coopered in France for export to the US (Vicard Damy Cadus etc.) so "pretty standard" bung holes I think. Fortunately I have a tool to ream a damaged bung hole so I enlarged the two involved by ~1mm and Viola! the tubes go in easily now. And they work great!

Has anybody had problems fitting the tube through the bung hole? It is a little too large in diameter.

        MoreBeer!

I bought some for future use. When I saw your questions I discovered that mine also didn’t fit. My husband used his hole saw bit to increase the inside diameter a little bit and that solved the issue. The bung then went it easy. Of course it would be nice if they had been just a bit smaller to make them more universal fit.

        MoreBeer!

Yeah it was too big for me. Nice little waste of money there.

        MoreBeer!

Yes I have. It did not fit in some barrels and was very tight with others

        MoreBeer!

Yes I have had the problem. Three of ten barrels had bung holes that were too small. When empty I got my Dremel tool with the small round sanding tip. In ten minutes the problem was solved. Be sure to sand the bung hole at the correct angle and you will get a good seal.

        MoreBeer!

I have one barrel that was a problem. The other 10 were fine. We tried to bore out the bung hole a little. That seemed to work.

        MoreBeer!

Yes we did. We used a wood rasp and just worked on the bung hole a bit. Fits fine now.
