It’s a good beer but a little bit of a bite to it like Sierra Nevada Good beer but not my favorite.
The brew came out as expected. good body and flavor. we had a small gathering at the house with two other beers on tap this one was gone at the end of the evening. I only had a small tasting will brew again..
This is a great beer. Nice balance of hops with a smidge of citrus.
Very flavourful, quite bitter (nice) and hoppy with a fantastic aroma of Oranges and hops. WIll share proudly.
Love this beer. I’ve been insulted with folks telling me that my home brew, this brew, is as good as commercial microbrews. I let them know that this is better.
Have brewed this kit twice and had very favorable results both times! With the first batch, a failure to close a spigot on the fermentation carboy during transfer from boil kettle resulted in losing about 2 gals before I recognized my mistake. This error led me to name the first batch "Open Sipot IPA".But aside from human error, this is an incredible kit
Awesome refreshing beer with a nice citrus flavor without losing the IPA hoppiness.
Adding fresh orange is sweet- make sure to use a good one! Some friends rate this as #1of my brews, but a little too tart for me...but still a good beer ??
I got my first M-80 kit because it was on sale, but since them I have very purposely intended to make it my "house" IPA!!!Brewed extract kit exactly per instructions, sanitizing orange cubes in vodka, and it is an incredible beer loved by all who have tasted it.
This has become a go-to everytime I order. I've brewed it at least 12 times. It's great if you follow directions, or you can save some of the hops (and $) for other batches if you wish. However, the OG tends to be a bit higher with the extract version than the all-grain version of the same kit. Either way, its way cheaper for the kit than the ingredients separated!
I was also concerned about the lack of clarity of the instructions about the orange addition. As another reviewer has mentioned zest is peel. I didnÂÂÂ?t want to get too spun up over the deal, and almost didnÂÂÂ?t add orange at all. However I came up with a compromise that worked well for me. After three days of fermentation I washed and peeled four Halo Mandarins. I didnÂÂÂ?t worry about contamination; I wore disposable nitrate gloves, I put my trust in Mother Nature. I broke the Halos down into natural sections, and then placed them into disposable muslin grain / hop bag. Then I squeezed the bags into the top small hole of my Speidels allowing the juice to run into the fermenter. I then steeped the bag until it sunk into the wort. I then dry hopped with seven days left of fermentation. The beer came out excellent, with an ABV of 7.7%. I always taste the beer left in the hydrometer and man this is going to be something special. As a matter of fact, I even rinsed the fruit bag and munched a few of the Mandarin slices afterwardsÂÂÂ_ÂÂÂ_ they were pretty tasty too, with a nice kick.
This is a great brew. The oranges provide a nice balance to the hops, making this a very smooth 'light hoppy' IPA. Following the recipe, you will NOT get an overly hopped brew (that might be more satisfying to some hop-heads), but an easy drinking ale. I've brewed this 3 times now, and plan to brew more.
Taking the price out of the equation and only speaking about flavor ... This is a magnificent IPA. It's no hop bomb, but it has enough bitterness to let you know you are drinking an IPA. The citrus adds a seriously fantastic profile to the beer that I've never had before. I followed the instructions and bought 3 valencia oranges. I zested the rinds and cut all of the fruit off of the rinds and diced the fruit into small pieces. I dropped the diced fruit and zest into some Starsan for 60 seconds and then dropped it all into the fermenter a week after the yeast had been pitched. Adding the price to the equation, this kit seriously can't be beat. $30 + yeast for a 5 gallon brew of this quality is nuts. I plan on brewing this one at least one or two times a year.
I chose not to add the oranges. The beer still came out very good. Great beer great value. If you are a hophead check this one out.
This beer packs a great punch and the value is second to none. I was not afraid to add the oranges after reading all of the comments from other fellow brewers. Since we were not in full orange season in November with the availability of Valencia oranges, I used 3 medium sized Navel oranges with 1 zest of an orange soaked in Star-San for 1 minute. I tried my first beer after 2 weeks of fermenting in the bottles and it was a silky smooth with a refreshing citrus finish that was very enjoyable. I recommend chilling the beer in the freezer for 15 minutes to get a creamy silk finish rather than a refrigerated beer. Definitely going to brew this again and substitute the orange for grapefruit.
Very tasty beer just to thin for me reminded me of a insanely hoppy coors light just tasted better. Maybe it was something I did but doubt it followed directions to a T
I'm a fan of hoppy IPA's and this tastes like a very hoppy double IPA. Unfortunately, the orange flavor was non-existent probably due to my procedure. I peeled & chopped valencia oranges and let them sit in sanitizer for about 5 min before straining & crushing by hand then adding to secondary. Secondary had a wonderful citrus aroma but the final brew had none. Was hoping the orange would offset the hoppiness but brew turned out very bitter. Not bad to my taste, just not what I was expecting. Friends were not thrilled either. Sounded interesting; might try again to see if I can get it right.
This IPA is awesome! I've now brewed it 3 different times in 3 different ways. Each time the beer came out great but due to my change in procedure, each time it was like a different beer.1st Time: No dry hops and no orange. I think this was actually my favorite variation of the three.2nd Time: Dry hopped but no orange. Came out very hoppy.3rd Time: Orange (3 different varieties) but no dry hops. The orange zest creates an intense bitterness that almost overpowers the hop bitterness and definitely overpowers the orange flavor. It's there, but muted. It has an in your face bitterness like a double IPA but without the high gravity (more bitter than Pliny with its 14 oz of hops).Next time (I'm ordering 2 more kits of this today) I think I will only use the zest of only one orange but will dry hop.All in all, this is the best IPA I've ever had and that's saying something since I'm drinking my Pliny the Elder (awesome in its own right) homebrew right now!
I was looking for a IPA that focused more on orange as opposed to the common grapefruit and this one nailed it. The low cost of this kit is surprising considering the amount of flavor this ale has. I followed the recipe and achieved the recommended gravities. I was a bit hesitant to add sanitizer to the ale, so I opted to soak the oranges for 24 hours in just enough vodka to cover them. The small amount of vodka didn't seem to impart any negative flavors and the orange shined through. Other than that, I wouldn't change a thing on this kit and will keep a steady supply on hand!
I've been very satisfied with every recipe kit I've bought from morebeer. I've never dry-hopped before, or added chunks of fruit- but this came out great. I was nervous taking hunks of orange and tossing into fermenter, but they do add a nice hint of citrus to beer. Lot of questions in other reviews as to what to do w/ oranges- here's what I did. I zested the orange, and then peeled the white rind off remaining orange. I cubed this, combined with the zest- and then soaked in star san for about a minute prior to adding. No issues w/ contamination or anything. Beer was very drinkable as early as 6 days after bottling. Sure will get even better as time goes on.
Was excited about this beer. Tried it right after it was carbed, smelled great but had a funky moldy/musty off flavor. I was guessing it was from the orange addition. Tried a bottle every week. 6 weeks after bottling the off flavor is gone and this has turned out great. Will definitely make again.
For some reason we had carbonation issues with this (issues probably on our part, not the kit). So I can't really give a full review of it, but for what it's worth, my initial tasting notes were: very orangey odor and tastes very sweet (orange) and bitter
Everybody loved this brew although I reduced the citrus by 50%, it still carried that flavor through.
Easy to brew, well liked by Seasoned drinkers. Orange was a interesting addition. Will brew again.
This is a delicious west coast style IPA. As others have mentioned, instructions on how to add the oranges aren't clear. I called and was told to zest the rind, then cut off as much as the white pith as possible, then cube and slightly muddle. I soaked in Star-San for 30 seconds before adding to the fermentor. It all worked out well. The bitterness mellowed out after 4 weeks in the bottle. Very rewarding since I have an orange tree in my back yard, so I can use homegrown oranges. The oranges are not too overpowering, but they are there on the nose and on the aftertaste. I used Safale US-05 yeast. This is now my go-to IPA kit, and a no brainer given the price.
We couldn't leave well enough alone! So without even trying it as packaged, We added 1 pound Blood Orange Cascade Candi Beer syrup, used BRY-97 dry yeast AND since the type of orange in the recipe is not EVER available where we live, We picked up some Blood Oranges to help differentiate Our recipe from the Base M-80 recipe. We obtained a 1.070 OG netting a 7.1% ABV after 3 weeks and a smooth 125+ IBUs. To ready our tasters for Our version of this brew, we served up the Sierra Nevada Hop Hunter which has 6.2% ABV & 60 IBUs. Our version of this kit is undeniably one of the BEST beers we've made in the last 3+ years!CHEERS!
I've brewed this at lest 3 times. As directed the first attempt, it came out awesome. 2nd attempt I used a saison yeast (on purpose), and it came out like a belgian IPA which was also awesome (one of the best beers I've brewed). Overall, with the kit price and amount of hops/extract it comes with, this is a steal.
I made this one sans the oranges (as I think putting fruit in beer is bad voodoo). It is delicious without the fuss of adding citrus.
