Really liked how this came out. I cut the hops by half, per other comments, and it tasted great. I'd like to make it again but with the full amount of hops to taste the original recipe.OG 1.065FG 1.013Yeast US-05ABV 7.1%
This is one of the best tasting beers I have ever experienced. I absolutely adore and will be making several more batches of it in the future. I would recommend to all my homebrewing friends.
I just finished this brew and I love the bitter taste. This was my first "robust" porter. It's like a bitter dark chocolate. If I do this brew again, I will use a stronger yeast. I didn't quite get the ABV I wanted. Final was 1.025ish.
Bought three all grain kits and they all came with extract instructions.. The devil is in the details
Good recipe from Jamil Zainasheff. Taste, aroma, color, mouthfeel are all excellent. My only problem was that I left a valve open while racking to secondary, and spilled about two gallons on the floor :-( Sad waste of good beer. I plan to brew it again. I labelled my bottles as "Night Heron Porter". I like animal names.
3 stars given due to hops in recipe, noted below. It's a great porter. Very balanced, on the high end of most specifications for the style, and it seems the recipe that pushes the styles extremes (while still being in range) are my favorites. I feel it is highly representative of the style. The one thing I struggle with on this recipe is the hops. From everything I can gather about the original, the IBU range from 32-35. If I run the hops from the recipe through IBU estimation calculators it comes out to: Tinseth- 53.8, Rager- 67.6, well over the packaged beer's IBUs.In my implementation of the recipe, I cut the hops to 0.5 oz Columbus at 60m, 0.25 Columbus at 30m. This still has taken the est. IBUs to 44.5 (Rager), as I was trying to balance between the recipe and the actual porter. All that being said, the hops are a bit dominant and I feel that 0.5 ounce at 60 (or even first wort hopping at 0.25 and then a 0.25 addition at 60) would be spot on. The implementation of the beer is still a bit young, and I would look for some of the bittering aspects to fade given a few weeks of age.
This is the best porter I've had in some time. Perfectly balanced.
All in all a good kit. I thought that the hop additions were a little aggressive for a porter. It came out a little too hoppy for a porter. I like hoppy beers so i am okay with it. I’ll order again but will reduce the hop additions.
Well balanced, def recommend the imperial flagship yeast for some nice English ale notes.
Brewed this with WLP001 California Ale carbed at 11 PSI with a 6' line at 40F. I made one deviation from the original recipe by adding an aditional 1lb of flaked oats to add more body. The beer came out fantastic and is one of my favorites. The color is a deep black, the aroma that of coffee and chocolate and the flavor of roasted coffee with a smooth creamy finish.
Very good porter. I did have to cut the hops way back. If you add the hops the recipe calls for it comes in aound 70 something IBUs. That seemed a little high for a porter. Overall good beer.
Second time I've made this and it's truly a great beer for only 2 weeks fermentation. Now that I have a keg and don't have to bottle condition I'm drinking the brew in only 2 weeks. The kit clearly states yeast must be ordered but does not say anything about the Whirlfloc Tablet, so I ordered a pack for nothing.
Really loved this beer, but when I was looking around on the net it was suggested to use .5 and 1.5 oz's of hops rather then 1 & 2 oz. Took this suggestion & if I did this again I would do it exactly the same!
It is a really good porter.
Great beer. It keeps getting better with age. Unfortunately my first batch is almost gone and haven’t had time to make the round.
I'm near the end of my keg of this kit, and I've got to say, it's been a really solid, easy-drinking porter. The aroma is of powdered cocoa, and the taste is sweetness with underlying chocolate and roast. I usually like more chocolate and black malt bite in my porters, so I'll adjust the recipe next time. But the kit as it stands makes a really good beer. Highly recommend. A few notes:1. I adjusted the bittering charge and flavor hop addition to .5 oz Columbus, and 1.5 oz Cascade respectively. The kit instructions list something like 35 IBU, and if you use the hops they give you, it'll produce a much more bitter beer.2. The chocolate malt comes from Hugh Baird. I find a fairly large discrepancy between chocolate malts from different maltsters. 3. I put this beer on cask, and the creamy mouthfeel that comes from that really accentuated the malt flavors.
Very dark and robust porter. I haven't compared it to the commercial version, but it turned out great. My friends and beer club peers loved it. More than one said it was "one of the best porters I've ever had."
Thank you MOREBEER and JAMIL for this AWESOME Porter recipe!I ALWAYS have this beer on tap!! People that DO NOT drink dark beer LOVE IT!I love watching their face when they take a sip!!CHEERS
I brought this a keg of this porter to my daughter's Christmas party along with another brew. The dark beer drinkers loved it and one craft beer drinker stated that it was one of the best porters that he ever had. Out of 5 gallons brought to the party I brought home less than a gallon! BTW there were only 35 people there so it appears that this was a hit! Personally I loved the color & flavor and I will be brewing this fine porter again!
Nice dark color and smooth flavor. Very drinkable
