Matt Brynildson of Firestone Walker Brewing Co., Paso Robles, California. It seems to some that Matt has almost been bred to brew beer. After getting a degree in chemistry in 1993, Matt went to work in Michigan doing research and development on hops for the brewing industry. In 1995, Matt went to the famous Seibel Institute of Brewing Technology to further his education. After brewing for Goose Island in Chicago and then moving to California to work for SLO Brewing, Matt was appointed Small Brewmaster of the Year in 2001. Later that year, he was asked to join the crew at Firestone Walker. Two years later Matt was dubbed Mid-Sized Brewer of the Year at the Great American Beer Fest AND at the World Cup of Beer, for a total of 12 medals in just three years! Since then, Firestone Walker has been gaining a large following in California due in part to it's flagship beer, Double Barrel Ale, which is produced in a Burton Union system that has the beer fermenting in barrels. Firestone Walker Brewing Company is the only brewery in the U.S. to ferment in barrels and one of only two in the world. In addition to the line-up at Firestone Walker, Matt also brews the Nectar Ales line of beers, as well as a few of the Trader Joe's house brands. Learn more at www.firestonebeer.com

Don't let the name fool you, this beer is easy on the oak, having been created so that all ingredients blend perfectly with one another, even the oak. In fact, the oak really takes a back seat to the wonderful malt characteristics that this beer presents, which may be hard to imagine once you realize there are 2 ounces of oak in this one! American base malt, a little Munich, some crystal, and that's it - simple, yet flavorful. Just how we like it. One can easily spend all night drinking this smooth amber ale ... in fact, many of us at MoreBeer! have done just that! The low bitterness ties everything together and makes you remember just how much of a craft brewing beer really is.

    • Makes 5 gallons
    • Estimated Original Gravity: 1.049-52
    • SRM (Color Range): 14

Liquid Malt Extract (LME) vs. Dried Malt Extract (DME)
MoreBeer! recipe kits are offered in both Liquid Malt Extract and Dry Malt Extract so that our customers can choose the format that best suits their needs and brewing style. LME is a viscous liquid, similar in consistency to maple syrup. In addition to being the more affordable option, many brewers find LME easier to handle than dry extract. DME is more condensed and comes in a powder format that is similar to baking flour. Although it’s a little more costly, DME is naturally lighter in color and stays fresher for longer. We highly recommend DME when brewing light colored beers.

        Great kit!

Great kit! I jacked up the ABV a bit and this kit handled it perfectly. I highly recommend it.

        Another winner

I have made 24 recipes in a little over a year now. I think that it turned out fairly well. I only used half of the oak chips after reading some of the other comments. It had good color and carbonation and a nice clean taste. I haven’t had the chance to share it with anyone else yet but expect it to be well received.

        deadendbrewers

made this last New Years day and it was superb. used ale yeast and added extra 1/2 oz cascade hops (cuz we like it) in the secondary. After our year end brew review we are ordering 2 kits today.

        dowing this one now

This one is currently being consumed. I need to bump the bottling sugar to 5oz next time as there is not enough fizz in the bottle.

Used it to make bourbon barrel ale

Have made this recipe several times using 1 oz of oak chips soaked in 6 oz. of bourbon on brew day. Added chips and bourbon to secondary, then aged for 6 to 8 months after kegging. The oak flavor was present but mellowed, the bourbon flavor was subtle. This is always a favorite among my friends. Mixing half and half in a glass with a vanilla porter makes an extraordinary combination.

Confusing beer. Maybe my word for complex?

My beer came out crisp and very clean tasting. Mellow malt, hop, and oak character. Easy drinking.Confused because the fermentation appearance indicated a much darker, maltier beer. However, Amber is an accurate description in the glass.First impression was that the beer was actually a little watery. FG was 1.011 and fermented around 65F. Light will be nice on the hot summer days to come. My kit came with the 1oz oak. Left on secondary for 7 days with the dry hop. Only overbearing reference may be the aroma but I can't guarantee that's the oak. Seems balanced overall.

        Really quite good

I read all the other reviews about this beer being too "oaky" but decided to go for it anyway. Yes, the beer has an upfront oak flavor, but I'm pretty sure that's the point. My opinion is that this beer is delicious and unique. If I brewed it again, I would not change a thing. Not big on posting reviews, but this beer seems to be getting a bad reputation that it does not deserve.

What a Great Easy Drinking Beer!

I originally got this kit after I had heard so much about DBA, and before any Firestone Walker beers were available in our area. This kit yields a delicious, fairly complex, full-flavored, easy-drinking beer. Now that we do get FW beers here, I can tell that the DBA I've had on tap was very close to the result of this kit. Brew it with confidence!

        Good clone recipe

Firestone DBA is a favorite beer, especially in the summertime. Was VERY excited to see this close recipe offered online! Only used half the oak chips that were included per another recommendation I saw online and it turned out well. Would buy again!

        excellent recipe

my first taste of Firestone Walker's DBA was at their tasting room in Beullton, Ca. and again the following day at lunch in Ventura, Ca. I really enjoyed both tastings. I was so excited to find that More Beer had a kit for me to try to duplicate this at home. the result was a very drinkable duplication of the original. when I make the kit again I will cut back a little on the oak chips. thank you for making this beer available to all homebrewers.
