Fermaid K

    Description

Smart brewers know that a yeast starter is the best way to ensure proper cell count and yeast viability prior to pitching. If you want a reliable starter for your batch of beer, you need to feed the yeast. Adding a yeast nutrient to the starter will give the yeast an added boost! Fermaid K is a yeast nutrient that works for starters and main fermentation. Here’s how it works:

Fermaid K is a complex formula that provides DAP, free amino acids, yeast hulls, unsaturated fatty acids, sterols; and micronutrients such as magnesium sulfate, thiamin, folic acid, biotin, calcium pantothenate, and other vitamins and minerals. Yeast use Nitrogen for protein synthesis and to maintain cellular growth. Nitrogen from the alpha amino acids contained in Fermaid K is utilized much more efficiently than from the ammonia salts like DAP. The unsaturated fatty acids and sterols available in Fermaid K are important survival factors needed to maintain alcohol resistance. They also help keep volatile acidity levels low. The cell wall fractions, available through the included yeast hulls, absorb medium chain fatty acids that are toxic to the yeast. They also provide nucleation sites to help keep the yeast in suspension. You do not need to add any additional fertilizers or DAP when adding Fermaid K. Use approximately 1 gram per gallon. Rehydrate in distilled water.
A rough approximate of weight is 1 tsp = 4.7 grams. We highly recommend using a scale to weigh the product for an accurate dose.

Fermaid K in the yeast starter for Red Wine.

A good healthy active yeast starter is essential to ensure as short a lag time as possible. Even though the must was at 68 degrees my roaring starter had the airlock bubbling at 4 hrs. This gives me peace of mind after tending the vineyard all year long.

Great for starting fruit wines. I like this better than Go Ferm but I have used them both together. Go Ferm is rather nasty to mix and smelly and I try to avoid using too many chemicals.

Good food for the yeast, a little goes a long way.

This was my first time using this. Used for 3 batches of beer. Seems to help. However, as it is recommend to be added when 1/3 of the sugar content happens, that's a bit hard to estimate. Otherwise, good stuff.

Overall excellent product. Would be even better if the smaller quantities came in a resealable vial or bag.

        Great yeast booster!

I added 1/2 the amount of Fermaid K once Fermentation started and the other 1/2 at 5 brix.

        Fermaid K

I've been using Fermaid K for years to supplement the yeast in all of my wines and it appears to help get my wines dry, normally to between -1.5 to -2 brix.

Perfect solution for stepped feeding a mead or cider

I have been using this for the last few batches. Step feeding appropriately at the right sugar break really accelerates the mead and shortens maturity. Great stuff.

        stepped mead nutrition

Using this and DAP for a stepped nutrition plan for my meads has gone from making tequila that required 6+ months of aging to calm down to deliciously drinkable mead in under a month

        Staggered Nutrient Addition

I make a lot of mead and use Ferm K as part of the staggered nutrient addition. This helps turn a batch around in a couple months rather than years.

        Excellent Yeast Food

I have been making starters for my brewing for several years; when I started using this in conjunction with Go-Ferm I've had faster starts on the starters and cleaner-tasting brews. 1/4 tsp of each for a 1L starter (yes, I know, SAE and Metric units...heresy!) of 1.040 wort has worked very well.

        Great for Tough Fermentations

Fermaid K is a must have product for tough fermentations (ie fermentations that may be lacking nutrients). I ALWAYS use it in my meads with a staggered addition schedule.

        Fixed the horrible smell

I've been making batches of Apfelwein (from the giant thread on hbt.com) and the first 3 batches I made gave off a horrible smell for about 36 hours of fermentation. Last batch I thew in 5g of this stuff and TADA, no smell. I've started using it in my starters too. One package is going to last me a long time with how little it takes to be effective. My only complaint might be that it has a tendency to clump up in humid environment.

        Peerfect for your big beers

I use this in all my beers over 1.070. Through a little in the fermenter when about 3rd of the sugar is still left. Helps the yeast finish out strong
