Rodger Davis former brewer of Drakes Brewing Co., San Leandro, California.

Another brewer that got his start at home - Rodger has been a homebrewer since 1991, and a commercial brewer since 1996. After taking the Eight - week course at Siebel, Rodger was brewing at a few places in the Bay Area until he settled down at Drakes in 2002. Since then he has been keeping the awards and praises rolling into Drakes with their flagship IPA, which took Gold in 2002 at the Great American Beer Festival. Drakes Brewing has been around since 1989, and is one of the San Francisco Bay Area's oldest breweries. Their attention to detail and their commitment to making great beer is evident in each batch that rolls out of the brewery. Definitely another 'must' for any beer fan visiting the Bay Area. Until then, find out more about Drake's at www.drinkdrakes.com.

One of the best examples of a West Coast IPA that you can find on the market. It has a clean, crisp malt character backed by tons of hops - 6 additions in all! Somehow, the hops aren't too over the top and don't squash the malt as one might think from just looking at the recipe. This IPA is one that we have been asked to clone over the years, and we are excited to offer it straight from the brewers log book. Not over the top like some IPA's can be, Drakes is one beer to search for. Rodger recommends using White Labs California Yeast, WLP001.

    • Makes 5 gallons
    • Estimated Original Gravity: 1.065-69
    • SRM (Color Range): 11
    • IBUs: 51-55
    • Estimated Alcohol Percentage: 7%

Liquid Malt Extract (LME) vs. Dried Malt Extract (DME)
MoreBeer! recipe kits are offered in both Liquid Malt Extract and Dry Malt Extract so that our customers can choose the format that best suits their needs and brewing style. LME is a viscous liquid, similar in consistency to maple syrup. In addition to being the more affordable option, many brewers find LME easier to handle than dry extract. DME is more condensed and comes in a powder format that is similar to baking flour. Although it’s a little more costly, DME is naturally lighter in color and stays fresher for longer. We highly recommend DME when brewing light colored beers.

Came out really good. Tastes just like Lagunitas IPA. Whether that’s good or bad is up to you. I liked it!

        Excellent Brew

This is a hit. The description is on the money. Smooth with nice citrus aromas and a good hoppy flavor without being bitter. Great feedback from friends. If you are comparing a Drake's IPA side by side, the kit is darker in color, with the flavor and aroma qualities very similar. I used the White Labs California yeast pitched direct, and dry hopped for 5 days in the primary starting at near the end of fermentation. Final gravity came out at 1.016. I had expected it to be lower, maybe a yeast starter next time?

A house favorite for all seasons

I cannot keep this beer in my stores - once it is ready to drink, it goes quick! Very rich and smooth and not over the top bitter. I've had it winter, spring and summer, so now it's time for my fall batch.

        Great beer!

I jumped on the MoreBeer webpage to order another kit, maybe two, but decided to add a review first. I have had it bottled for 3 weeks, and the plan was to let it sit another week, break it out when the kids are here for Christmas. But, I wanted a sample, so I chilled one bottle just to satisfy my curiosity. It was absolutely a pleasure to drink. I do not belief you'll regret trying this kit! Now....back to my ordering!

Great recipe, will absolutely make this again.

High on the alcohol and hoppiness, but this turned out a great beer. If you are a true hop-head you could dry hop a bit longer than the recipe calls for, but for me 7 days of hops in the secondary was perfect.

        Good IPA

I like this IPA pretty well but I am not on the "best IPA EVER" train. Its preference though I guess. Its a good recipe and the beer comes out nice.

        Awesome Beer

Great beer, hard to mess up... One of the best beers I've made to date. Going to be a House regular from now on. Not to overpowering with hops... Nice smooth taste.

        Goldilocks Favorite IPA!

This was the first beer I brewed after a 20 year break, and I have made 10 five gallon batches since last April. The description is right on. Drakes is a great West Coast style IPA with a great balance of hops and malt. I am not surprised that every review so far is 5 star.

A staple in our IPA stable

In a never-ending search of a satisfying IPA, Drake's is a kit we return to time and again. It's one of the more clean, fresh tasting, and complex thirst quenching beers we brew. An alcohol content with purpose but not over the top. If you like IPAs - you'll love Drake's. Thank you San Leandro.

        My

I've brewed this one a couple times and have claimed it as my house brew as far as IPA's go. A couple of friends that I've introduced to brewing have told me that this beer is the one that inspired them to home brew. Great Hop aroma and taste.

        Great IPA - highly recommend

Have brewed this twice, and will brew again. I use very fine mesh nylon bags for hopping to reduce sediment. Transfer to 2nd fermenter at 7 -10 days, dry hop and add gelatine clarifier, and another week to 10 days to bottling. Wonderful complex multi-layered hop flavor and aroma, finishes creamy, smooth and mellow without lingering bitter aftertaste.

        Best Beer I've Ever Brewed

This is by far the best beer that I have ever brewed. It's also the first that doesn't taste like a home brew. It's as if I purchased each bottle at the local beer store. I plan on brewing this beer again. Thankfully I have a decent supply to last me a little while.

The Best IPA I Have Ever Drake...

This IPA is outright the best IPA I have ever drank and brewing it myself makes drinking it an absolute pleasure. I followed the recipe exactly except I added the aroma hops (.5 oz of Magnum and 1 oz of Columbus hops) with the Whirlfloc at 5 minutes left in the boil. I transferred the cooled wort directly from an 8 gallon stainless steel brew kettle with ball valve directly into a carboy through tubing with the Siphon Spray Wort Aerator (BE510) attached to the end. I pitched California Ale Yeast (WLP001) into the wort and oxygenated for an additional 5 minutes or so which resulted in a fermentation so violent it blew the rubber stopper out of the carboy because the airlock became clogged (the one time I didn?t use a blow-off-tube). I cleaned everything up and transferred the wort into a secondary after 7 days racking the beer directly on-top of the dry hops. I dry hopped for an additional 7 days, if you bottle as I did place your siphon tube into two doubled-up fine mesh bags and it will strain out all the hop gunk when transferring into the bottling bucket. I could only wait 11 days after bottling before I had to try one and to my surprise the beer was fully carbonated and awesome. It has a nice aroma, a good but not overpowering hop kick at first but the most amazing aspect of the beer is that it finishes so smooth and dry without leaving a taste in your mouth. I would recommend this beer to anyone, it will be the mainstay in my refrigerator as I just ordered two more kits and I am going to add 4 oz of apricot extract (FF60) before I bottle my next batch. Hopefully it turns out great, thank-you Drake?s Brewing and MoreBeer!
