Belgian Ale | 5 Gallon Beer Recipe Kit | Extract

    Description

    • Belgian Ale will give you a full roundup of phenolic, fruity, clove, plum, and banana flavors
    • Includes Perle and Saaz hops
    • Estimated ABV: 5%
    • Estimated IBUs: 32
    • Makes 5 gallons of finished beer

Belgian ales are really about creating a simple yet elegant malt base upon which the unique Belgian yeast strains can create their wonderful, complex flavors. This Belgian Ale is their equivalent of our pale ale in alcoholic strength and body. The difference is that the hops are very subdued and only complimentary where as in many American beers hops can create a majority of the flavor profile. One is not better than the other just different, and we love diversity in beer.

Terms used to describe Belgian Ales include phenolic, fruity, with the occasional clove, plum, and banana flavors coming through. Sometimes you just have to try one to understand. In the Dubble and Triple you will have some higher alcohol flavors coming through. This version is less alcoholic and highly drinkable.

Any of the four Belgian yeast strains that we carry from Whitelabs could be used in any of the Belgian recipes. They are all excellent in their own right. The malt extract for this kit is made entirely from our German Pilsner Malt, giving it authentic European flavor. We use turbinado sugar to help up the alcohol and dry out the beer during fermentation.

The extract version of this kit does NOT include grains. Most of the flavor from this beer is derived from the yeast and fermentation.

    • Makes 5 gallons
    • Estimated Original Gravity: 1.049-53
    • SRM (Color Range): 4
    • IBUs: 32
    • Estimated Alcohol Percentage: 5%

Our recipe kits DO NOT include grain bags, yeast or priming sugar. To find our yeast recommendations, choose your preferred kit option above and then select the drop-down menu under “Yeast Options”.  For more info, click on the recommended yeast(s) below in the “You Might Also Need” section below. Liquid Malt Extract (LME) vs. Dried Malt Extract (DME)
MoreBeer! recipe kits are offered in both Liquid Malt Extract and Dry Malt Extract so that our customers can choose the format that best suits their needs and brewing style. LME is a viscous liquid, similar in consistency to maple syrup. In addition to being the more affordable option, many brewers find LME easier to handle than dry extract. DME is more condensed and comes in a powder format that is similar to baking flour. Although it’s a little more costly, DME is naturally lighter in color and stays fresher for longer. We highly recommend DME when brewing light colored beers.

You'll definitely need a blow off tube for this beer. Very active fermentation.

        First batch of Belgian Ale

I rated this kit with 4 stars simply because it is not yet bottled. It might rate 5 stars if the small taste I had from the hydrometer vial is any indication of the final taste. It appears to have yielded an alcohol content of 5.5%. the safale s-33 yeast worked very hard for about 2 days then slowed dramatically. Total fermentation stopped in 4.5 days. Yeast was very forgiving to temperature variations. I could not get the wort temp down to lower than 68 to 72 but it seems it didn't hurt it. Will be bottling this week and I'll bottle age it for 2 weeks before a taste test. I'll know then if it rates 5 stars.

        Good Stuff!!!!

I've made and bottled this a few times. Have enjoyed it each time and others have asked for it when visiting. Decided to try to keg it (just learned how to keg). It came out great. Will do this again. Great Beer!!!!!

        This one was popular

Had planned to enjoy this one on my own, but when there was a problem with another keg, I took this one to a party instead. Guys, this one was a hit on a hot summer afternoon. Easy drinking, lower alcohol - just the thing for a backyard party. Even the guy that brought his own case of Bud Light was won over. We didn't kick the whole keg, but not for lack of trying. Pro tip: serve this with small cups, or it will go too quickly...

        True to type.

When I brewed this kit I did not realize the the LME, German Pils, included a portion of Carapils malt. Thus, I added 1 pound of Carafoam malt and steeped it for 30 minutes. I was afraid this would result in too much body and foam, but it turned out OK. Wyeast 1214 was used, as called for, and a starter was made. The yeast produced an ale that was a little overly "fruity," and the brew was a little too sweet for us, and we are Belgium ale fans. I may brew this again, but will use less German Pils, add a pound or two of 2-row base malt and steep for 45 minutes or an hour, do a full 5-gallon boil, and use a yeast producing fewer fruity compounds, Right now I don't know which yeast would give that.

        Great Beer Kit!

One of the first brews I made. I jumped the gun and bottles it too early (didn't take gravity readings...big mistake). Anyhow, left it in the bottles for a while and still turned out great!

Very nice - just what I was looking for

I was looking to brew a nice basic Belgian Ale, not a dubbel or a tripel or a saison, just a basic ale in the Belgian style. This fit the bill exactly. I combined this kit with Wyeast Belgian Trappist yeast and it came out very nice indeed. Fruity aromatics, nice malty flavor, a bit of hops, nice and smooth. I'll likely use this in future as the basis for some variants with grains, possibly even a raspberry ale.

I will brew again - very drinkable yet complex

I prefer beers that are less hoppy then some so I chose this Belgium, I was impressed by the amount of flavor/complexity in the beer without too much bitterness. Very drinkable on a summer day, there was a small hint of fruit that comes through perfectly. The final color was more amber then what was pictured above for a great look in the glass. This is not your beer if you like a hoppy IPA...I will brew this beer again.
